It is important to read all terms prior to downloading or purchasing apps. In 2021, all the apps tested used photo recognition software to identify plants, but some tested in the past required more descriptive input from the user, similar to traditional plant keys. Since 2018, the students and I have evaluated a total of 14 apps thus far (see complete list at the bottom of the article). In the fall of 2021, I drastically increased the number of identifications used to rank the apps by involving 16 groups of university students enrolled in the lab. Each year (2018-2020) I evaluated a minimum of six apps (available for both Android and iOS smartphones) using 10-12 plants, with the best performing apps carrying over to the next year’s evaluation. As an expert in this area, it was with a bit of skepticism I began evaluating plant identification apps in 2018 for use in the Weed Science Laboratory class at MSU (i.e., CSS226L) and for presentations to various garden and commodity groups. There are now several smartphone apps available to assist with plant identification. Plant identification is one of the many services offered at Michigan State University (MSU) Plant & Pest Diagnostics and the MSU Herbarium, and help is available through the Michigan State University Extension Lawn and Garden Hotline (1-88) and Ask Extension through eXtension. Plant identification has been and continues to be a matter of familiarity, knowledge passed down through mentorship by family or friends, or perhaps something learned in school. Plants are the foundation of food webs and they are tied to our understanding of how ecosystems function. We are driven to identify plants for many reasons sometimes it is a curiosity about the world around us, other times it is out of the desire or need to manage areas like gardens, agricultural fields, restored habitats, and/or natural preserves. ![]() ![]() ![]() (“ZEN” or the “Company”) (TSXV:ZEN and OTC:ZENYF) is pleased to announce that the University of Guelph (Guelph) has filed a provisional patent regarding an electrochemical exfoliation (ECE) process to produce graphene oxide (GO) from Albany PureTM Graphite. ![]() If I were looking for a thorough cleaning service, with excellent customer service and at a reasonable price I would look elsewhere.ZEN Graphene Solutions Ltd. We have had a cleaning service for over 2 years and have never experienced anything close to these issues, lack of communication if deficiencies were communicated and such a high price point for sub-standard work. Ater arriving home, my wife was very upset with paying the amount we did and receiving such poor attention to detail. I waited the rest of the day and evening to hear a response, but did not receive one. She said she would discuss this with her workers. I found a sink full of dirty dishes (which was discussed to be done), none of our 5 ceiling fans were dusted, our garbage can was empty but no trash liner was replaced (which we had a large box of bags directly next to the trash can), two of the small bedroom trash can liners had large holes exposing the entire bottom of the trash can, a paper shredder bin next to our computer desk was not emptied and our couches were not wiped down. I returned home and the ladies had already left. Jenny told me that my house was very neat and tidy, then gave me a price that did not reflect any discount. Bheem also goes to meet the Incas, aliens and many other groups in various episodes. Bheem and his friends make fun of them by attempting to imitate them. Kalia wants to learn Kathakali, a performance art form native to Kerala, and he is ridiculed.ĭancing with the Tribes, the image of the ‘tribal’ cannot be more stereotypical, and their language is gibberish. In the Hindi version of the episode, the Malayalis spoke Hindi (the language Bheem and his friends speak) with an accent that sounded odd, and many of them were caricatures that exclaimedĪiyo from time to time, meant to evoke mirth. It was interesting to note how linguistic ‘othering’ was an important way of constructing the identity of Malayalis. This imposition of values of who is ‘good’ and who is ‘bad’ on to the animal world no doubt makes the little viewers internalise certain erroneous notions.Īn episode of particular interest to me was one where Bheem and his friends visited Kerala on an adventure. Rakshasa, or the demon, in the literature of the “civilised” and settled agricultural communities, is identified with the tribal forest-dweller and the giant in the story, aĬuriously, even as Bheem saves an elephant from a cruel hunter and is proclaimed a hero, in other episodes he beats up hyenas, fights tigers and attaches fireworks to a lion’s tail, simply because the last three were ‘threats’ to his friends. There is reason to believe this racial prejudice historically comes from the antagonism between the expansionist invaders of the ancient times who lived in agricultural city-states and the dark-skinned tribes, who were forest-dwellers. Jack and the Beanstalk, the giant is dark-skinned and wears tiger skin. It may not come as a surprise that not only him but most other villains in the show are dark-skinned. The sheer violence displayed by Bheem, masquerading as “teaching the villains a lesson”, is unnerving and he is an epitome of the macho male (or as much of a macho male that a nine-year-old can be).īheem has a rival in his village, Kalia. She never participates when physically strenuous fighting or other kinds of movements are involved. She “loves playing with the boys but also is very feminine and keeps herself busy with all sorts of arts and household chores”, describes the official website of the show. The gender bias is explicit: Chutki has the fairest skin of all the characters and has two pink spots on her cheeks. Though the producers of the show have had extraordinary success, hardly anyone has ventured beyond the ‘fun’ and ‘excitement’ it offers children to analyse the sexist, racial, linguistic and other discrimination deeply embedded in the show. Little Bheem lives in the fictional city-state of Dholakpur, and in each television episode, when faced with various perils, he proceeds to tackle them with the help of his friends Chutki, Raju and Jaggu Bandar, the monkey.ĭespite the lifeless animation and dim plotlines, the show currently has at least 40 million viewers, and Chhota Bheem merchandise from toothpaste to toys flood Indian stores. ‘Chhota Bheem’ narrates the story of the valorous nine-year-old Bheem, a persona loosely based on the eponymous character in Hindu mythology known for strength. ![]() ![]() The training program will fulfill requirements to take the American Board of Pathology certification examination in Forensic Pathology at the end of the year of training. The total for all 52 cards in a deck is zero. In the simplest card-counting system, aces and 10-valued cards are assigned a value of negative-one, low-valued cards are assigned positive-one, and 7s, 8s, and 9s are assigned a value of zero. Cards valued 7, 8, or 9 don’t have as much of an effect on winning or losing as low- and high-valued cards do. The more low-valued cards that remain in a deck, yet to be dealt, the more likely it is that you will lose the next hand. Which means your next card will take you over 21 and you’ll lose. Because there are so many 10-valued cards in the deck, if you get dealt a low-valued card, the likelihood is that your other card will bring your total into the low teens. Low-valued cards-2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s-are not favorable for you. The more aces and 10-valued cards that remain in a deck, yet to be dealt, the more likely it is that you will win the next hand. This method, called “counting cards,” is far easier than you might guess.Ĭounting can be as simple as tracking cards in three categories: those that are favorable for you, those that are unfavorable, and those that don’t have much effect on the likelihood that a hand will either win or lose.Īces and 10-valued cards are favorable for you because they get you quickly up to (or close to) 21. By keeping track of how many high-valued and how many low-valued cards have been played, you can predict the likelihood of the next hand being a winner. If, for example, there are more 10-valued cards than small-valued cards left to be dealt, you’re more likely to get a winning hand. In most casino games, roulette for example, every separate wager has the same probability of winning or losing. The Rules of Blackjack Enable You to Increase Your Wager in Favorable Situations And splitting the two 8s into two separate, eight-valued hands … wow! Not only do you get to turn one bad hand into two good ones, you get to increase your bet. In doing so, you also must double your wager. However, when you have two cards that are the same-e.g., two 8s or two jacks-most casinos allow you to split them into two separate hands. With a value of 16, this hand is most unfavorable. A hand totaling eight is favorable for you. What about a hand that totals, say, eight? More than half of the cards you might draw next are either aces or 10-valued, any of which would give you a strong hand. Only a 2, 3, 4, or 5 prevents you from going over 21 and losing immediately. If the dealer has a strong hand-say she has a face card showing-you’ll probably lose if you stand. Which situations are favorable, or not, in blackjack?Ĭonsider getting dealt a hand that totals 16. Increasing Your Bet in Favorable Situations The casino-the dealer-also gets two cards, and must stand (stop drawing cards) or draw (request more cards) based on a set of rules.
